About Our Piupiu

Traditional piupiu are made from flax strands which curl when they dry. They are regarded as taonga(treasures) which are treated with great respect and stored carefully.

As Just Kidding's piupiu are not the 'real thing' they can be used for free play as well as powhiri and kapa haka.

Our piupiu are made from pure cotton knit fabric which is printed in New Zealand, just for us. Our unique design enables us to make piupiu in any size - from baby to adult.

Each piupiu is individually gathered and sewn to an elastic waistband or taaniko patterned belt or bodice. Once sewn, a piupiu is completed by cutting along the printed guide lines, and pulling each strand firmly so it curls like the real flax strands. It's a time consuming job.

To save you money, we also offer uncut piupiu, which you then cut yourself. If you are buying a set of piupiu you will save a considerable amount of money. Perhaps you could have a 'cut and cuppa' get together. We provide simple instructions - you'll just need sharp scissors.
